COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will examine demographic diversity in today's global environment. The course will begin by exploring global emigration, immigration and refugee issues from an international business perspective. Specific national or regional business cultures and differing perspectives on gender, family, age, ethnicity, and treatment of the disabled will also be examined through case studies, readings, and role playing. The course will subsequently examine the effects of diversity on international corporate structure and behavior and demonstrate, through case studies and guest speakers, how proactive businesses have adapted to changes in demographic diversity and gained a competitive advantage.

COURSE PREREQUISITES- junior standing


COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. To instill factual knowledge (terminology, trends, and concepts) of demographic diversity within an international context
2. To demonstrate how various demographic diversity concepts, principles and theories relate to domestic and international management and marketing practices
3. To aid students in becoming less centric oriented when functioning as a manager


ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND THE COLLEGE HONOR CODE
: All students are expected to adhere to the College of Charleston Honor Code (found in the student handbook). Failure to do so will result in the assignment of an "F" in this course.


REQUIRED TEXT:: Financial Times and/or The Economist

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory, however, a student will be allowed 2 absences. If a student has more than 2 absences, 2 points will be deducted from the final grade for each class missed. Furthermore, students are responsible for anything missed in the lectures.

GRADING POLICY:
Exams (3 @  20 pts)
Class Participation/class work/pop tests (25 pts)
Research paper  (15 pts)

All examines will be essay and short answer. No make-up exams will be given unless a student has a valid excuse authorized by the Dean of Students.

Students will be required to write a research report on a diversity topic with regard to specific non-US country/geographical area Topics will be determined within the first 2 weeks of class.

There will be no make-up for missed homework and class assignments. Homework will be due at the beginning of class and, if turned in late, will not be accepted.

Students are expected to read the assigned readings and periodicals, contribute to class discussions and participate in class exercises. The participation grade will reflect how prepared students are for class discussions. Class attendance IS NOT synonymous with class participation.
